Not Fighting Alone

I. Introduction:

A. God never intended for man to live in isolation (Genesis 2:18).

  1. Solomon observed that "two are better than one" (Ecclesiastes 4:9-12).
  2. Jesus sent the twelve out two by two (Mark 6:7).

B. The New Testament describes Christians with several relationship terms.

  1. Brethren (family) (II Corinthians 13:11 and I Timothy 5:1-2).
  2. Fellowlabourers (Philemon 1:24).
  3. Fellowservant (Colossians 1:7).
  4. Fellowprisoner (Colossians 4:10).
  5. Workfellow (Romans 16:21).
  6. Partner and fellowhelper (II Corinthians 8:23).
  7. Fellowcitizens  (Ephesians 2:19).
  8. Now, let’s talk about the relationship of fellowsoldiers.

II. Body: Thinking About The Phrase “Fellowsoldier” (Philippians 2:25 and Philemon 1:2).

A. Fellowsoldier defined: “a co-campaigner, that is, (figuratively) an associate in Christian toil: - fellowsoldier” (Strong’s # 4961).

  1. As saints, we face common trials (I Peter 4:12-13).
  2. Therefore, we should not assume we are meant to face them alone. We have brethren to depend on (I Thessalonians 5:11-14).

B. To be faithful to our Lord, we will strive together for the faith of the Gospel (Philippians 1:27).

  1. Timothy was exhorted to be a good soldier of Jesus Christ (II Timothy 2:1-4).
  2. He was also charged to war a good warfare (I Timothy 1:18).
  3. The warfare and armor are spiritual (Ephesians 6:10-17).

C. Since this is a spiritual war, the people we rely upon should strengthen our faith rather than weaken it (Ephesians 4:16).

  1. Our warfare is spiritual, not fleshly (II Corinthians 10:3-4).
  2. So, we do not want to have the people we depend on to be carnally minded people of the world (Psalms 1:1-2).
  3. Faithful brethren strengthen and encourage us in the right direction (Hebrews 3:12-14 and Hebrews 10:23-25).

III. Conclusion: The goal of fighting the good fight is eternal life (I Timothy 6:12). Victory is ours for the taking (I Corinthians 15:57). The reward is shared (II Thessalonians 2:1). So, let’s be fellow soldiers all the way to joint-victory!
