Do You Believe God Or Not?


I. Introduction: This lesson is about a simple but searching question: Do we really believe God, or do we only say that we do?

A. Let me begin this lesson by establishing the fact that our faith in what God says or lack thereof does not change the fact that He is right (Romans 3:3-4).

  1. God’s word is truth (John 17:17).
  2. His word is not going anywhere even if man chooses to reject such (Psalms 119:89, Psalms 119:152, Psalms 119:160, Matthew 24:35, and I Peter 1:23-25).

B. Some are not content with what God has said. They want it echoed, approved, and softened by men. Just as Paul warned Timothy, there are those that will stack up teachers to validate what they believe (II Timothy 4:1-5).

  1. That mentality makes easy prey for false teachers who know how to say the WRONG THINGS the RIGHT WAY [so to speak] (II Peter 2:18-19; cf. Micah 2:11).
  2. Consider this: if Noah had waited for consensus, his family would have perished (Genesis 6:22, Genesis 7:5, Genesis 8:18, I Peter 3:20-21, and II Peter 2:5)?

II. Body: Who Is Man To Think We Know Better Than God (Job 40:1-14)?

A. When God questioned Job, the point was clear—man is in no position to challenge God’s wisdom (cf. Isaiah 40:13-15).

  1. God is greater than man (Job 33:12 and I Corinthians 1:21-25).
  2. Therefore, we must decide: will we trust God, or lean on our own understanding (Proverbs 3:5-7)?

B. If you believe God, then the wisdom of this world is foolishness to you (I Corinthians 3:18-19).

  1. The world emphasizes appearance, health, longevity rather than godliness (I Timothy 4:1-8).
  2. If you believe God, you’ll not conform your thinking to the world (Romans 12:1-2).
  3. If so, you will reject human philosophy when it contradicts Scripture (Colossians 2:8 and I Corinthians 1:20-25).

C. If you believe God, then you know material wealth won’t last (Proverbs 23:5, Proverbs 27:24, and Matthew 6:19-21).

  1. Your investments reveal what you truly believe (Matthew 6:19-21 and I Timothy 6:6-19).
  2. What you are looking forward to most will not be earthly (I Peter 1:3-9).

D. If you believe God, you know few will be saved (Matthew 7:13-14).

  1. Then you will not measure truth by the majority, but by God’s Word (Exodus 23:2 and Luke 6:26).
  2. You will strive diligently to be among the faithful rather than comfortably follow the crowd (Luke 13:23-24).

III. Conclusion: So the issue is not what we claim to believe, but what our lives prove. Do you actually believe God? True faith is displayed by obedient action (Titus 1:16, Hebrews 11:6-7, and James 2:21-24).
